Why Your Dog Trainer's Qualifications Matter (And Why I Keep Learning)

OCN London Qialisied

OCN Qualification to support IMDT training.

When you're choosing someone to help train your dog, it's natural to ask about experience. But there's another question that's just as important:

How committed is your trainer to continuing their education?

Dog behaviour research continues to evolve. We understand far more today about learning theory, canine emotions and welfare than we did even ten years ago. That's why I believe professional development shouldn't stop once you've qualified.

I'm pleased to have recently completed the Principles of Dog Training and Behaviour course through the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT), achieving 6 Level 3 Credits in an accredited and assessed programme.

What does that actually mean?

This wasn't simply an attendance certificate.

The course is assessed and covers many of the core principles that underpin effective, ethical dog training, including:

  • Learning theory

  • Canine behaviour

  • Reinforcement and motivation

  • Understanding why dogs behave the way they do

  • Welfare and ethical training methods

  • Building reliable behaviour through positive training

These principles form the foundation of everything I teach.

Whether we're helping a puppy settle into family life, improving recall, reducing unwanted behaviours or building confidence, the aim is always the same:

Teach the dog in a way that is fair, effective and enjoyable.

Why qualifications matter

Unfortunately, dog training remains an unregulated industry.

That means almost anyone can advertise themselves as a dog trainer, regardless of experience or education.

For owners, that can make choosing the right trainer difficult.

I believe clients deserve someone who:

  • Invests in recognised education

  • Understands modern behavioural science

  • Uses reward-based, welfare-focused methods

  • Continues learning throughout their career

  • Can explain why a technique works—not just demonstrate it

Dogs deserve nothing less.

Learning never stops

This qualification builds upon my existing IMDT training and forms part of my ongoing commitment to continuing professional development.

Every course I complete ultimately benefits my clients.

It helps me:

  • Explain behaviour more clearly

  • Tailor training to each individual dog

  • Keep up to date with modern best practice

  • Deliver training that is practical, kind and evidence-based

Every dog is different, and every owner is different too. The more knowledge I gain, the better equipped I am to help both.

What this means for my clients

Whether you're looking for help with:

  • Puppy training

  • Recall

  • Loose lead walking

  • Confidence building

  • Everyday manners

  • Clicker training

  • Enrichment

  • Building a stronger relationship with your dog

you can be confident that my training is built on recognised principles rather than outdated myths or quick fixes.

Looking ahead

Professional development is something I genuinely enjoy.

As dog training evolves, I'll continue investing in new education, practical experience and recognised qualifications so that every client benefits from the latest understanding of how dogs learn best.

After all, if we expect our dogs to keep learning, it's only fair that their trainer does too.
